Time Management Strategies When You’re Running Out of Time

We’ve all been there at one point or another. A deadline is quickly approaching and if we don’t manage our time perfectly, we will miss it. Being in this situation is never something that we really want to experience, but sometimes it is completely unavoidable.

While coming up on a deadline is stressful, there are several things that can be done to help make sure you meet your deadlines. One of the most important things you can have in place is time management strategies. With the following, you will be able to do your best to meet your deadline with as little stress as possible.

Prioritize

GSD_Running Out of TimeThe first thing you should do when you are attempting to meet a deadline is to prioritize. Regardless of the project you are working on, there is likely to be several tasks that need to be completed. Having a checklist of these tasks and working diligently to mark them off can help to keep you motivated and less stressed.

Avoid Distractions

When you are working toward completing any project, it is best if you can avoid as many distractions as possible. This could include certain websites or social media platforms, newspapers and online outlets, or even voice or text messages. Many even find it easier to concentrate if they shut their office door while working on completing a deadline oriented project. This helps keep others from entering the office and posing a distraction issue.

Work Efficiently

Before you even get to the point of being short on time, it is best to determine ways to make your work more efficiently. You should be constantly looking for ways to improve the speed in which you do something, but keep your accuracy up at the same time. When you are able to accomplish this, many of your day-to-day tasks will begin taking less time. In the end, this will save you a great amount of time that you can then devote to projects you are working on that are more time-sensitive.

Delegate

If you are in a position to do so, don’t be afraid to ask for help in the completion of a project that is reaching its deadline. Having some of the smaller tasks taken off your shoulder could give you just the amount of additional time you need to finish the project properly and correctly. While you are delegating portions of your project to others, make sure you are communicating with them carefully. Doing so can help make sure everything is finished on time and that there are no issues that surface at the last minute.

Communication

Finally, make sure you are communicating throughout the project completion process. This includes the times when you feel as though you are preparing to miss a deadline. If you have come to the conclusion that all your time management skills have failed and you will still miss the deadline, communicate this with the person you owe the work to as soon as you possibly can. Just make sure you include the reason you are missing your deadline in your request for an extension.

When push comes to shove and you are short on time, these are some of the best things you can do to help ensure you will complete a project on time. However, by implementing them in your daily life, you will have a better chance of always staying on schedule and completing any deadline that may surface. Be sure to keep these tips in mind while you are working on any project that comes with a tight deadline.
